DIY Tuffed Headboard
Making this headboard was much easier than I thought it would be and thought to share it. First, I would like to say that I wanted a tufted headboard for a long time, but everything out there was not quite what I was looking for. Either it was too expensive, not the right colour, or not tufted enough and that is when I decided to make my own.
Things you’ll need is…
- Board 3 x 5
- 2 Bed pads
- Batting
- Fabric
- Wax thread
- Drill
- Button kit
- Long needles
- Sharpie to mark the measurements
- Scissors
- Staple gun
First, you will want to know the size of your headboard and how many buttons you wanted. Since I have a queen size bed the length had to be 5 feet and the height would be 3 feet from the top of the mattress. As for the buttons, I wanted enough buttons to give the dramatic look I was looking for. Below you will see the measurements that I used to make my headboard and number of buttons I chose.
Next, I marked the board where the buttons would go and then drill holes on the markings. The hole does not need to be too big, just enough for a needle to go through.
Place the foam pad on the board with ridged part facing the board, this will allow more a tufted look, and with the scissors cut foam to board size.
Cover the foam and the board with the batting and staple it to the back.
To have the buttons the same fabric as the headboard, I needed to buy a button kit. I found one at Fabricana.
Now we begin to tuft the headboard, I started from the middle and worked myself out, this will allow me to have the fabric spread evenly through the board.
Thread wax string through the needle, reason for using wax string is that it doesn’t slip. You will have to put the needle with the wax string into one of the drill holes so that it can go all the way through to the other side of the board.
Cut the needle off the wax string and tie the wax string to the button, I did about two knots. On the back side of the board, you will have to tie it as tight as you can, I recommend that you get help on this part. I had someone pushing the button down while tied and stapled the wax string.
After all the buttons have been put on, it is time to staple the fabric to the back to the board.
I wanted to mount the headboard onto the wall but I felt that it would be best to attach it to the bed with 2×4, so that if I wanted to move my room around I wouldn’t have to worry about the holes in the wall.
I hope this post helped.
